Ekaterinburg is the home for one of the most numerous and authoritative East European scientific groups working in the field of onomastics. For many years this group of researchers edited an eponymous periodical collection of research articles which became an important forum for the study of proper names in the Soviet Union in the 1960-1980s. First issued in 2004, the journal Voprosy onomastiki (Problems of Onomastics) substantially continues its traditions. The first editor of the journal was Prof. Aleksandr Matveyev. Since 2010, the journal has been edited by Prof. Elena Berezovich.
Since 2014, the journal operates on a no-fee open access basis: the journal does not charge any publication fees, all publications are freely available to the reader on the journal's website immediately after publication.
